where is the freedom to be innocent?

This stock photo child is so embarrassed.

When I was in grade 2, I embarrassed myself beyond my own understanding.

At the beginning of the school year, we had a unique desk setup. Four desks put together like a square. Four students facing each other while the teacher hovers and talks around us.

With assigned seating like that it was also the first time I’ve ever sat close to a girl.

For weeks it was nothing special, school as normal. The square got along, and I was a model student. I paid more attention to the school work than other kids, just because I’m quiet. That’s how I roll. But then my subconscious had a hidden agenda. Continue reading

keep helping – ED06

The name of this school is basically the way I talk. Kitsilano, BC.

Never a dull moment for the Virgin Mary, erect on a pedestal due to the unplanned pregnancy of Jesus. Succour of his early stages in boyhood, until he grew up to put the weight of others on himself.

She was a good mother, so positive, so helpful. Strict whenever the Son of God would be mischievous.

Christmas time, for some people, is a reminder that life can have a way of being incredibly convenient. There are things that bring people together in the strangest happenstance. And no matter how bleak the road ahead might seem, there’s a Deus Ex Machina out there to let you know that everything has a way of working out in the end. Continue reading

This belongs to an artist on Deviant art. I think it’s rollingrabbit? if I’m wrong correct me.

I guess sometimes it’s a debate if I want to be a person that tells you what you want to hear, or the person that tells you what you need to hear. The Latter choice always sounds more clearer in my head when it comes to topics or discussions that are dear to me.

On Saturday the VGX broadcast went live onto the internets. It was a retooling of the far defunct Video Game Awards pet project that was on Spike TV for god knows how many years. Nobody liked it. Even when things seemed like they were getting better, gamers decided that they needed to hate it for what it was. Continue reading

Haven’t the foggiest – ED05

ED05

Waterfront – January 2013… I think.

That time that Vancouver was engulfed in a fog. It was a hauntingly beautiful, for it stayed like that longer than a week. From morning to night fall and all through the night, it just stayed.

When I was a child, I always associated fog with the afterlife. Winters back home in Manitoba were especially memorable, for it was nothing but white in every direction. I’d shout “Are we in heaven?!” with my child like ignorance. Those around me were mocking my abilities to see things differently.

I didn’t care, for it felt awesome. Continue reading

Soldier on – ED04

The lone soldier keeps watch of the door underneath him.

The lone soldier keeps watch of the door underneath him.

When you have the same routine for your boring, conventional, day-to-day life, the tiniest little visual can make a lasting impression. As I took the stairs to the lobby, due to the incompetence of the elevator, I was suddenly halted by this little green soldier.

“Who goes there?” It said with it’s stance. Plastic toys obviously can’t talk, and last I checked I’m not in a Pixar film.

Goggles over the eyes, and a hand on it’s hip in the sassiest of military stances. It wasn’t going to take any guff. Right to the left of the exit sign, a child designated it as the utmost adorable crossing guard. The military probably doesn’t use the word adorable to describe itself. Well… Not so much ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell’ as it is ‘Haven’t seen it, can’t tell you’.

The thing I love about inanimate objects is that they never mind getting their picture taken.

For the next two weeks greeting that solider every morning became part of my routine. I Gave it a nod, maybe a salute… Never once had to question why it was there, just enjoyed the Feng shui of where it was.

Some time after our first meeting, the little plastic soldier got to go home. Perhaps the child finally remembered where they put the little green man.

It did not pain me to see it go, because if there’s one thing that has taught me about living in this building, there are plenty of little things that become pleasing for the eye.

Cat Crimes – ED03

ed03

Cat sticker on a window at Sperling. Cats are such a commodity these days.

Internet cats are their own breed it seems. When an internet and a person’s video camera love each other very much, they look toward their kitty friend to fill the void of happiness in their life… and live vicariously through the popularity of their little balls of fur.

“This is so mind blowing, I didn’t think anything like this would happen,” said after the 12th attempt at a youtube video. “My cat is so great! Thanks for making me feel rich, cat.”

Yes, thanks cat. Because beyond the  horizon, you’re not my pet, but my net-worth. My pet-worth.

The next day, a swat team busts down an apartment door. Cats and cameras every which way. A man hunched over his laptop clicking refresh. Many different accounts, all with the same purpose, mining the human ability to detect cute.

As the man gets ducked into a squad car, and the cats are gathered to find better homes, an officer is reached for a simple statement:

“It’s a shame bitcoins never quite took off.”

All Spoils day

yeah, I went there.

Oh internet, I humbly come before you with my cap in my palms because I wish to decree something.

All too often am I forced to grace your presence, talking about things I enjoy with very little detail or context.  Where ‘The thing with the thing’ is all I’m allowed to get by with, when ‘and he shows up and it was crazy,’ Is the more exciting option.

Friends get together with common interest, but no one gets to talk about the thing they’ve just seen/read, until everyone has seen/read it. What if you have the friend that doesn’t get around to it? He doesn’t want to hear it, but you’re itching to talk before it’s too late. Continue reading

feet – ed02

Only because it feels somewhat embarrassing at time. Self consciousness can take over, if only for a brief moment. Then the picture I’ve decided I want to take keels over and gets pointed directly to the ground.

To pass it off, I treat it like a joke of sorts. It’s on instagram where these photos usually play, so in a way they’re grouped with the likes of food shots, but in no way to be fetishized. Just harmless, unintentional embarrassment.

There’s a bunch of photos, 15 in all so far. These are the ones I enjoy the most. The very picturesque of the bunch.

I can’t be the only one though, there ought to be loads of others out there that can be put off with using their phone as a camera at times, then you end up taking a picture of something you didn’t intend.

Maybe you ended up really liking it. Maybe you kept it.

Share the unintentional, as long as it isn’t in poor taste.

This is the third picture I’ve taken with my iPhone. It’s almost embarrassing to admit sometimes that my photography is exclusive to the device. Yet what it’s capable of goes without saying on the contrary.

I can’t really take photography seriously. Most people I know seem to be “professional” about it. It’s humorous in it’s ways because you have to understand how I feel about the subject. Everyone can hold a camera, and a lot of people do. You can take classes on how to do everything right: The tools, the equipment, the aperture, white balance, focus. But it doesn’t really mean anything if you don’t have an eye for it in the first place. Continue reading

feral marketing

Adorable image randomly found over twitter that represents a reverse Ponzi Scheme.

You wouldn’t think that every single person that uses the internet is an unpaid viral marketing intern, but it’s basically true. So it astounds me that people have to go to school to learn how to exploit an ignorant part of a business, that hires people to type a couple of words here and there. But maybe it’s a good thing the average joe doesn’t get paid, because their marketing is poor.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be cynical to those that tweet for a living. Continue reading
